DAKTARI, the community Project of Wait a Little

In 2006, Philip and Gerti of Wait A Little Horse Safaris were approached by friends, Ian and Michele Merrifield, with the idea of DAKTARI: Create a bush school to motivate, educate and inspire underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage.

Both excited by the mission, Philip and Gerti felt directly involved in that community project. They helped with the sponsorship for this worthy cause by buying a piece of land, which provided the perfect setting and facilities to turn the dream into reality…

  Ian & Michele

Limpopo Province is the poorest area of South Africa. Many schools are over-crowded and sometimes there are more than 100 children to one class. As there are not enough teachers, there is a lack of discipline and attention in class and the children often stay away from school.

These children will never have the opportunity to see the African wildlife in its natural environment – right on their front doorstep! Most of the private game reserves are expensive and only cater to foreign visitors. How can children learn to care for their environment, if they never actually get to see or experience it? Seeing, experiencing, learning and understanding nature, as well as interact with orphans animals is the main goal of the teaching program at DAKTARI.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAEvery Monday DAKTARI welcomes a new group of 8 local underprivileged children for a week and gives them the opportunity to discover, learn and become passionate about wildlife and conservation, their heritage. The children have the opportunity to get a hands-on experience to deal with the animals and educate their behavior.

DAKTARI also supplement their school curriculum in English, maths, environmental job opportunities, life skills and social issues. The goal is to enable today’s local underprivileged children to eventually be able to secure good employment in nature reserves, thereby improving their future quality of life.

International volunteers are involved by sponsoring and educating the children, following a precise environmental program.

Many people have already made donations, which have helped to establish DAKTARI and its infrastructure: Solar panels, rondavels and dormitory to accommodate the children and volunteers, enclosures and clinic for the orphaned animals. There is still much that is needed in terms of construction and maintenance and there are of course the daily running costs of this unique project.

280 € ($ 340 / £ 210) covers the whole stay for one child to attend 5 days of educational program at DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage.

Ian and Michele have dedicated their loves to DAKTARI and spend every minute running the bush school and raising funds in order to keep DAKTARI going for the children and the animals.

DAKTARI has great future development ideas to give the local community the chance of a better life and opportunities.

With more income DAKTARI wants to focus its passion and abilities on:

  • Composing of an early childhood program so from the very young age, toddler would be encouraged to care for the environment.
  • Revamping the local village into an Eco Friendly Touristic Village where the community could welcome tourists and share their culture. We picture our local village with a place for visitors to stop by for a drink/break while being surrounded by the vibe of the South African Culture.
  • Starting a market where art and craft (made with recycling) could be sold. This would help tremendously toward sustainability.
  • Organizing and/or building a base for social issues where the community could get professional support and attention.
  • Creating a link between unemployed people and potential employers, by helping the local community in writing their CV’s and getting work experience.

Whilst the current income generated by the volunteers and existing sponsorships helps, additional funds are required for the day-to-day running of Daktari and its planned future developments.
